Description

Šōgantšī (“shooh-GAHN-cheeee”) hails from the same 'verse as Sabēmžīm, originating on the planet Suntšōla in the Gamma system of the Dandelion Field cluster. As the name suggests, the game is a fusion of Shogi and Xiangqi.

K is for the King, which steps one square in any direction but is confined to the Palace (the set of nine darker squares). It may move into check but unless the other player doesn't notice, this gets you Captured. Also, if the two Kings face each other on an otherwise open file, one King may shoot the other from a distance, once again Captured.

A is for Advisor which steps one square diagonally, as in Xiangqi, and (also like in Xiangqi) is confined to the Palace.

G is for the General, which steps one square in any direction diagonally or one square directly forward, like the Silver General in Shogi. Unlike the Silver, it does not promote.

N is for Horse, which leaps two squares forward and one to the side, like in Shogi. Unlike in Shogi, the promoted version moves as a Knight in Chess.

L is for Lance, which moves any number of unobstructed squares forward. After promotion, it moves any number of squares backward or forward, or else one square horizontally.

B is for Bishop, which moves any number of squares diagonally. Promotion adds to this the ability to step one space orthogonally.

R is for Rook, which moves any number of squares orthogonally. Promotion adds the ability to step one space diagonally.

C is for Cannon, which moves any number of squares orthogonally, without capturing, or else captures orthogonally after leaping over exactly one piece, friend or foe. Promotion adds the ability to step one square diagonally as long as it does not capture.

F is for Fóðētu (“FOOH-dhææt-oo”, the e being pronounced like the a in “cat” on account of it preceding a t), a type of super machine gun. It moves any number of squares diagonally, without capturing, or else captures diagonally after leaping over exactly one piece, friend or foe. Promotion adds the ability to step one square orthogonally as long as it does not capture.

P is for Pawn, which steps exactly one square forward. When it promotes, it steps one square in any orthogonal direction or one square diagonally forward.

Promotion is optional when a promotable piece has advanced to at least the seventh rank. Unpromoted Pawns and Lances must promote if and when they reach the ninth, and unpromoted Horses must promote on the eighth or ninth. A piece may be barricaded but it must have squares it could theoretically to advance to.

Captured pieces are retained in hand and can be deployed at will. However, the following restrictions apply:
1. A Pawn may not be dropped into a file where you already have an unpromoted Pawn.
2. Advisors may only be dropped within your own Palace.
3. Non-Advisor pieces may be dropped anywhere but your Palace.
4. No piece may be dropped onto another piece; you may not capture with a drop.
5. A piece may not be dropped promoted, and may not promote until it ends a move in your promotion zone.
6. No Pawn may be dropped so as to doom the King to being Captured on the following move, not even as the springboard for a Cannon or Fóðētu.
7. No Horse may be dropped on the eighth rank, and Pawn, Horse, or Lance may be dropped on the ninth.

Perpetual check, where you hound the enemy King endlessly, is not permitted.

The game ends when one King is Captured; the other player wins. In formal play, an illegal move is a forfeit. Four-fold repetition is an impasse; both players tot up the pieces they have on the board, with five points for each Cannon, Fóðētu, Rook, and Bishop; and one point for every other non-royal piece. If both players have scores above 34, or if neither do, the game is a draw; otherwise the player with a score above 34 wins.
