As the sun descends to horizon and
Orange and dark blue the clouds are stained.
Venus can be seen, and the marréd sheen
Of the moon shines above the plain.
A hint of clouds in the east, I say.
We may have rain ere starts the day.
Swallows make their way at the end of day
While the nighthawks and owls awake

A largish fowl, called the great horned owl
Sings to all those who cannot sleep
The smallest louse, and timid mouse
Can't escape the watch the owl keeps
Then down with nary a sound it comes
A mouse can't hide; it's too late to run.
Breezes start to blow, and the owl home goes
To a place where no squirrel dares leap

The clouds roll in, and the rain begins
To pour down in torrential sheets
Blue jagged light, briefly shines so bright
Night returns then in a heartbeat
The crash of thunder then passes through
As after lightning 'twill always do.
The storm will pass, but the rain will last
And will cool off the summer heat.

The night is done, and the morning's come
And the rainstorm is all but through.
Robins sing their song as they hop along
Worms have been flooded out, 'tis true.
Red junglefowl in the barnyards crow
Their welcoming of the day to show.
And the catbird sings and he now takes wing
For that was not his mate that mewed.

Author's Comments

This is a song I wrote for a writing challenge last September.

Note: Red junglefowl is simply a fancy word for "chicken."

I adore the imagery, especially the fancy "red junglefowl" line. Great job!
